Smoke on the river bbq club competition

  

KCBS sanctioned BBQ competition has returned to Burlington, Kan., offering a total of $19,250 in prizes. Smoke on the River BBQ Club will host a DOUBLE on Labor Day Weekend. One Masters Competition will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, and a second Masters Competition on Sunday, Aug. 31, at Kelley Park, Burlington, KS 66839. A Kids Q is planned Saturday. MASTER COMPETITION (Saturday and/or Sunday)

Four meats will be judged in this contest: Chicken, Ribs, Pork and Brisket. KCBS 2025 Official Rules and Regulations & Judging Procedures will be used. Teams must compete in all four meat categories to qualify for Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, or Third Place Overall.

KIDS Q (Saturday night)

 Kids Q will consist of two divisions: 10 Years Old & Under; and 11-16 Years Old (based on child’s age as of August 30, 2025).  Each participant will be provided one pound of hamburger. Cheeses, breads, condiments, buns and sauces are welcomed in the entry submitted. Entries will be judged on Appearance, Taste and Tenderness.

SET UP

  • Space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Parking of contestants will begin at noon Friday, August 29 (earlier if organizer notified).
  • Camping spots vary in size. 30-amp service is available to 20 spots. 50-amp service is available to 28 spots. Other desirable spots are available without electricity and would require a generator provided by the contestant.
  • Free ice and a water source will be available.
  • A designated area will be provided for trash and ash disposal.

TURN-INS

  • All meat will be inspected upon arrival at the park, beginning at noon Friday. No preparation may begin prior to meat inspection.
  • Teams will be given an approved KCBS numbered container for each meat by our KCBS reps at the cook’s meeting at 5 p.m. Friday, August 29, at Kelley Hall.
  • Entries should be brought to the Judging Area at Kelley Hall at the following turn-in times on Saturday, August 30: Chicken: noon; Ribs: 12:30 p.m.; Pork:1 p.m.; Brisket: 1:30 p.m. Identical turn-in times will be observed on Sunday, August 31.

PRIZES

  • More than $19,250 will be paid out in prize money for all Smoke on the River BBQ competitions.
  • Top cash prizes for each Master competition will be Grand Champion ($1,500), Reserve Grand Champion ($750) and Third Place Overall ($500) for best execution of all four meats. Master competition will pay down to seventh place in all four categories; ribbons will be awarded from 1st to 10thplace in all four categories.
  • Trophies and/or plaques will be awarded to grand champion, reserve grand champion and category winners.
  • Top cash prizes for the Kids Q will be 1st place ($150), 2nd place ($75), 3rd place ($50) in each division – 10 Years Old & Under and 11-16 Years Old. In each division, the Kids Q will pay down to 10thplace in descending $5 increments; ribbons will be awarded from 1stto 10th place.
